Rollators and Walkers
The Rollator (often referred to as a walker) has been widely used in Scandinavian and European countries for many years, but it has only recently gained popularity in the United States. A Rollator is essentially a standard walker equipped with wheels. It may also be called a rolling walker, walker with wheels, or fitness walker, among other names. Depending on the manufacturer or Fitness walker, the wheels can vary in size, but typically, four larger wheels replace the two smaller wheels and posts found on traditional walkers. Fitness walkers often feature caliper or hand brakes, allowing users to lock the wheels by squeezing the brakes and release them to continue walking.
Some specialized Rollators, designed for certain medical conditions, allow the user to control the walker with the handles. For example, when the handles are squeezed, the walker moves, and when they are released, the walker stops. This feature can be particularly beneficial for individuals with Parkinson’s disease, as it helps "park" the walker when standing still and provides control when preparing to walk again.
Another major benefit of Fitness Walkers is their collapsible design, which makes them easy to fold and store, even in a car's trunk or backseat. While standard walkers can also be folded, they do not offer the same compactness as a Fitness Walker. It's important to consult with a doctor before purchasing a Fitness Walker, as long-term studies on their effects are limited. Since each person’s disability is unique, it’s crucial to assess the suitability of various Rollators with a healthcare professional, particularly for patients recovering from surgery, to ensure proper walking techniques and exercise routines are followed.
A Fitness Walker can also support mental well-being by promoting independence and facilitating regular physical activity. By bearing a significant portion of the user’s weight at hip level, the Fitness Walker reduces stress on the ankles and knees during walking. It's essential that the walker is designed to encourage the body’s natural walking motion.
